DeepL Übersetzer

I want to preface this by saying that DeepL is the gold standard as far as machine translation goes for quick, simple translations that sound like natural language. I’ve used this app for a few years and I stay using it for a reason. However, a major pain point is that DeepL often hallucinates details which aren’t there, and which occasionally create drastically different meaning than the intent of the original text. For example, when translating passages from Japanese, DeepL’s translation will often invent pronouns which are not present in the original text and will stubbornly gender parties being spoken about, to the point of inventing descriptions in the alternative suggestions that are not even remotely applicable to the original text. For example, a sentence which makes no mention of a subject’s gender may be changed to definitively state that the subject is a “her”, and will even suggest alternatives like “little girl” when this is not implied or stated anywhere in the source text. Further, it does not give the option to change this in the alternative suggestions. I run into this problem routinely with Japanese text, even when the source text states outright that the subject being discussed is male. Once you’ve learned the particular idiosyncrasies of this app and how to anticipate what elements will reliably be incorrect, it’s definitely useable and very useful, but personally I think it can be a little bit fraught if you simply take its output at face value.

I am working on relearning German, which I spoke as a child through young adult. The toughest aspect of German is its grammar. Other apps are riddled with errors. My German family has reviewed translations provided by DeepL and found them very accurate, including the more difficult grammar aspects. My family is from Bavaria, so there are also differences in vocabulary and idiomatic expressions (although many are found in the „Alternatives“ section). I am teaching my almost three-year-old granddaughter German side-by-side with English. I appreciate the feature that allows me to hit the record button, say the phrase in English, then say the provided typed phrase in German for my granddaughter. Occasionally, I will play the recording, giving her the opportunity to hear a voice other than mine. For myself, I use the regular speed to double check my pronunciation accuracy, but I appreciate the option that allows me to slow down the phrase for my toddler granddaughter. Thank you for such a great app! It means a lot to have a source that I trust to teach me and my granddaughter virtually error free.

The app is 100% accurate but why is it so hard to get dialects? I’m trying to translate words into American English yet it translates into the British version and it’s really hard to try to choose to dialect, I have to struggle in order to get the one I’m trying to translate like I don’t want Swiss or Austrian German, GOD! But other than that the app is absolutely amazing and I’ll change it into 5 stars when that gets fixed.

Nice app. Please add option to scroll history of translations on main screen. When practicing Spanish I like to build on phrases and it helps to see what I just did. Thanks!

Use it for French. Very accurate and I love the option for alternative words and sentences. But the sound of the voice playback is horrible and sounds like a robot. This seems unacceptable in the age of AI.. The sound of the voices in Google Translate sound like real humans and are far superior. Deep L voice is painful and sounds like it’s from the 90s. Also, the layout is a little bit clumsy compared to Google Translate. I feel if these two things were improved, this app would be perfect.

This was recommended to me by a native Spanish speaker, saying it was more accurate than just using the one by the popular search engine. I use it regularly for Spanish and mandarin, and have used it for Italian too. My only note is that when I need to hear the translation spoken the robot says it SO FAST. It’s also lower volume even though my settings are up high. Over all I really like and recommend the app, I just wish it had an option to speak a little slower lol
