Geocaching®

I downloaded this app hoping to try geocaching for the first time. What I got instead was a masterclass in artificial scarcity. As a free “Basic Member,” you’re locked out of every cache with a difficulty or terrain rating above 2.0 stars meaning nearly every interesting, challenging, or creative cache in your area is invisible unless you pay up. This isn’t a “premium features” upsell, it’s a hard wall dropped right in the middle of the actual hobby. Let’s be clear about what’s happening here: this isn’t Groundspeak protecting premium content they created. Cache owners create and hide these caches for free, as a community hobby. Groundspeak just sits on top of that community and decides which of those free community contributions you’re allowed to see, based on whether you pay them a subscription. You’re not paying for extra content you’re paying a toll to access what other hobbyists already gave away for free. Worse, this restriction is baked into the API itself, so even third-party apps can’t get around it. There’s no honest way to sample the full hobby on iOS without either paying or jumping through browser-based workarounds that shouldn’t be necessary in the first place. If you actually want new people to fall in love with geocaching, you don’t handicap their very first experience of it. You let them explore, get hooked, and then offer premium conveniences to enhance what they already love not gatekeep the fun part behind a paywall from minute one. Geocaching could be an incredible, genuinely free outdoor hobby. Instead it’s a bait-and-switch: “free to download,” sure, but structurally designed to make the free tier as unsatisfying as possible so you feel pressured to subscribe. Do better.
