vor 3 Wochen Disappointing

Used to be ran audible member when they had a monthly credit option - that was great. Now it’s this “monthly selection” membership, with absolutely no reminder to pick your book monthly, because if you don’t you lose it. I signed up for a 3 month trial and only remembered to pick one book. Support refused to help recover lost books. Am switching to a competitor of Audible for a better experience going forward.

vor 3 Wochen Recent change to the timer UI

Love this app. I use the timer feature when I listen while falling asleep. I don’t like the recent change to the UI for setting a timer. It doesn’t start the timer automatically like it used to. I keep thinking I’ve set a timer only to wake up in the morning and see that I have finished the book. 🫠 could you roll this change back?

vor 4 Wochen Theo of Golden

Theo of Golden is one of those books that quietly pulls you in and stays with you long after you’ve finished reading. It touched something deep in my heart and soul, and honestly, I feel like it has changed me in ways I didn’t expect. The story is beautiful, heartfelt, and filled with moments that make you stop and think. I found myself carrying the feelings from this book with me even after I finished it. It’s more than just a good read it’s a story that leaves an impression and makes you see certain things a little differently. Truly unforgettable.

vor 4 Wochen Outstanding!

A 1930s historical fiction book that will change your life with the history of our country and knowing how women and others were treated at that time. Only goes to show how far we as women have come and how much they’re currently trying to turn time for women back to then. This is a book that you will never forget. It’s a great expansion of her book “the Help” but expanded to the proportions of a gone with the wind novel. Enjoy and share with everyone.

vor 4 Wochen I almost stopped listening. By the end I was crying.

I almost stopped listening. I was initially looking for MM fiction where the main characters were not white! As a white gay man, I was… I don’t know what I was looking for except to get another perspective. I was confronted by my own whiteness, my own biases and stereotypes and racism that I didn’t even realize I was carrying. I’m embarrassed to admit that when I first started listening, I was almost indignant because, based on the reviews and write-ups, I understood that the main characters were Black. I can’t believe I’m admitting this, but I was infuriated in the beginning because they didn’t “sound Black.” WTF. I am a psychologist who works specifically with gay/queer non-white men, and that was my assumption without even knowing it. Wow. I had to sit with that. BUT I continued listening because I was immediately invested in Logan and Mattie. As I learned about their experiences and processes, I was simultaneously confronted by my own racism and stereotypes and assumptions. I was afraid that listening to someone working through trauma and serious mental health issues would be triggering for me—both as a survivor and a psychologist—and I have to say that Kacen handled it beautifully. I was both impressed and inspired. Logan working through his trauma, and Mattie figuring out how to love someone while also taking care of himself—there was so much there for me. Parts of this book hit personally, and parts made me think of conversations I have with clients. I would actually recommend this book to a client. Honestly (not that I haven’t already been brutally honest), the social commentary interjected between chapters in the audio version became a little distracting. I found myself fast-forwarding through some of that chatter because I just wanted to get back to Logan and Mattie. As a writer, I also learned a lot from the different points of view and the interludes. Some of the audio production still felt like too much for me, but even those moments gave me ideas for my own writing. The book left me thinking about multiracial relationships, my attraction to men of color, and how my whiteness enters those relationships—including in ways I may not recognize. I want more fiction that gives us room to explore those questions, alongside all the other complicated things we bring into intimacy. I’m so glad I kept listening. I finished this book in tears, invested in these men, and inspired to write. And clearly with some things of my own to think about.

vor 4 Wochen A real adventure, told by a real adventurer

Dan Grec is the real deal, and Two Years a Nomad reads exactly that way. What I enjoyed most about this book is that Dan doesn’t try to turn long-term overland travel into some polished highlight reel. He shares the incredible places and experiences, but he also talks about the problems, uncertainty, mistakes, logistics, and those inevitable moments when an adventure stops being romantic and simply becomes hard. That honesty is what makes the book so good. And listening to Dan read it is rad! It’s an easy, engaging read/listen :), but there is a surprising amount of useful information tucked into the story. Dan has a knack for explaining how he handled situations without turning the book into a technical manual. You learn while following along with the adventure. As someone who has spent a good portion of my life traveling, exploring, and dreaming up the next ridiculous adventure, I especially appreciated how authentic this felt. Dan doesn’t just write about adventure. He actually went out and did it. If you’re interested in overlanding, extended travel, Africa, or simply what happens when someone decides to stop talking about the big adventure and actually goes, this is absolutely worth reading or listening to. Great book. Great journey. And knowing Dan, I can tell you the person behind the story is every bit as genuine as the book.
